Distance Learning and Other Guidelines

April 9, 2020

Dear Bassett Families,

I hope this email finds you and your family doing well. I am sure by now you have read or heard about the closure of our campus for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year. Although this is understandable, it is a shock to our school and family systems, nonetheless. There are many questions as we navigate this scenario. Thank you in advance for your patience as the school leadership team continues to meet to discuss, explore, and problem solves numerous topics surrounding this situation with the superintendent and her leadership staff. Plans are in the works, and information will be forthcoming. Please try to be considerate and remember that this too, is new for our teachers. Many of them are not only working hard to transition into this new phase of teaching, but they are also home with their families and working with their own children to keep them engaged in academics.

Remote Learning Plan:

Our teachers are going try to virtually meet with their students during the following days and times. This schedule will be distributed to our students via social media and posted on our school website. While all students are encouraged to complete their Distance Learning instruction online, we realize that not all students have access to yet. Teachers are working with students and families to ensure instruction continues and will be providing those students without access to devices paper-pencil learning packets. The next set of paper- pencil packets will be available for 9th- 12th grade and will be distributed at BHS on Wednesday, April 15th from 9:30- 11:30 A.M. This will include work for two weeks. Students will return paper-pencil learning to BHS on Friday, May 1st from 9:30- 11:30 A.M.

Activities:

Please know that any fees paid for end-of-the-year activities will be refunded in full. Also, encourage your student to stay connected to our school by participating in our Virtual ASB spirit events by following them on Instagram and by frequently visiting our school website for the latest information.

Our hardworking Yearbook students finished the yearbook just in time! There is still time to purchase; you can go to http://ybstore.friesens.com/stores/770902. The yearbooks are usually delivered to the school site during the second week of May. There will be more information as far as the distribution of yearbooks as we approach that date.

Students who are interested in being part of ASB for the upcoming school year will have an opportunity to apply online. The application link will be shared with our students soon. Advisors will be contacting students for virtual interviews.

School Counselors:

Your counselors are still available to support you, the best they can virtually. Please refer to the following Counseling Department link for more information. We are continuing to plan for next year’s programs, but we are now sending everything electronically.

Other important information:

I know what we are currently doing is by no means equal to what we accomplish when we have our staff on our campus, but we have made great strides in just a couple weeks. We have gained so much knowledge and accomplished what until recently seemed like the impossible. We are committed to navigating our way through this and continuing to deliver meaningful and engaging learning opportunities via multiple digital platforms.

I appreciate all you are doing to help keep your children safe during this time. I know you may have questions and appreciate your patience as we all learn to navigate through remote learning. We look forward to continuing to provide our students with an excellent learning experience.

Lastly, I want to encourage you and your student to follow Bassett High School on social media via Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and our school website. We try to post the latest information and resources as soon as we have it.

Stay safe and stay healthy,

Hector Vasquez
