LA PUENTE – Bassett Unified School District celebrated more than 500 members of the Class of 2019 with ceremonies for Nueva Vista High School, Bassett High School and Bassett Adult School, where students raised their diplomas in triumph.
Nueva Vista High School held its graduation ceremony May 30 at Torch Middle School’s Watanabe Center.
Nueva Vista High School graduate Karolyn Alishan was met with enthusiastic applause during her heart-felt graduation speech, recalling all of the past year’s challenges and triumphs, thanking her friends, family, teachers and mentors for helping her persevere and graduate from high school.
“Without the support of my principal, Maria Herrera, and all of my amazing teachers and my counselor, and the support of my friends and family, I don’t know if I would be here today,” Alishan said. “I am grateful to Bassett for never giving up on me and instilling in me the will to never give up on myself.”
Alishan served as a student representative on the Bassett Unified Board of Education and was awarded the Principal for a Day Scholarship and received a Certificate of Recognition from the Office of Assemblywoman Blanca Rubio. She plans to attend Mt. San Antonio College in fall.
Bassett High School’s graduation ceremony took place May 31 on the BHS football field.
Bassett High School valedictorian Vincent Hong Lee thanked his peers and teachers for making him feel welcome in the Bassett community and helping to build his self-confidence.
Salutatorian Victoria Sanchez encouraged her fellow graduates to continue to work hard and to never give up.
“Imagine yourself as a candle, and your spirit as the flame – unless you cup your hands around the fire, the wind might threaten to blow it out – graduates, whatever challenges you may face in the coming months, do not give up,” Sanchez said.
Lee plans to attend UC Berkeley in the fall to study software engineering while Sanchez plans to attend UCLA in the fall, following a math and science pathway.
Bassett Adult School’s graduation ceremony was held June 6 in the school’s quad, where graduate Lynette Galan told her peers to be proud of their accomplishment.
“It’s not about who finishes the race first or even who finishes last,” Galan said. “The important thing is that you finish the race, the important thing is that you never give up.”
The graduation ended with a live band and refreshments for everyone in attendance.
“On behalf of Bassett Unified School District, congratulations to our graduating classes of 2019 for all of their hard work and dedication to their education,” Superintendent Debra French said. “We are so proud of all you have accomplished and all you will go on to achieve.”
